Home Lake Plan

Our first step towards a Lake Plan was a questionnaire in 2008. The survey results indicate that the majority of survey respondents: - has owned and resided in a seasonal lakefront cottage for between 30-50 years
- has either public road or privately maintained road access
- uses a septic system that is between 10-20 years old
- supports a periodic inspection program
- supports regulations that would increase septic system set back
- considers the minimum lot frontage of 200 feet to be appropriate
- would prefer to have size limits imposed on existing property redevelopment to between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet
- would prefer to limit building height to a maximum of two storeys
- would exempt garages and sheds from lot building requirements
- have concerns about rising property taxes but do not want commercial development on the lake
- support regulating the height and width of boathouses
- would prohibit boathouses on lots with less than 100 foot frontage
- appreciates the natural beauty of a lake which is not overly developed, has good summer access and good swimming conditions, yet is close to town
- considers peace and tranquility on the lake to be of prime importance
- considers water quality to be of major importance
- have concerns that it may have deteriorated over time due to septic malfunction, fertilizer and pesticide use, as well as boat engine pollution
- have concerns about the impact of algae growth and excessive wake on the recreational enjoyment of the lake
- would like to have annual water sample testing carried out by the District
- are prepared to fund such testing if District will not
- consider that unrestricted boating on the lake could prove to be detrimental
- is not really sure of the best way to prevent this
- would like to see speed restrictions and boating regulations enforced by the proper authorities

We consulted with other cottage associations and now acknowledge that for a lake plan to be effective, it must be supported unanimously by all lake residents, a very difficult requirement given individual expectations. We are trying to select the most pressing issues to our membership and, after due consultation, prepare a draft proposal for discussion by all. As each item is approved, it will become a part of our lake plan.
It will take a few years to achieve our goal and in reality we find that it is always a "work in progress". In the end, though, the effort will be worthwhile.
First priorities are: - establish a policy regarding recreational water use, (to see, choose the "Recreational Water Use" tab to your left)
- establish "Cottage Watch" - coming soon
- establish a land development policy - coming soon
